Who we are

a brief company introduction

The shipping agency Navetur saw the light of day.

The tourist agency Equatours was fused with Navetur, creating the dynamic connection between maritime transportation and tourism.

Navetur-Equatour included tours and trekking in the offer of services. As a natural consequence of the trekking, rural tourism was also made available.

We focused on training staff, discovering new trails, building and rehabilitating bridges in the natural park.

We worked hard to meet the request for our eco-packages, while admitting more staff and buying more vehicles.

We were involved, on various levels, in defining a model of tourism for São Tomé and Príncipe, i.e. through our work in the National Council of Tourism.

We had to run a lot faster to keep up with our good reputation, helped by Bradt's guide to Gabon and São Tomé and Príncipe, articles in the Independent, the Times, the Guardian, the BBC, the CNN Travel Magazine, Condé Nast and many more.

The flux of tourists was increasing every day and we hardly had time to breathe. Even so, we made an effort to slow down, in order to dedicate more time to our clients, to the re-organization of the company and to each other, so that our services would continue to improve. We also had to invest in more vehicles and more staff again.

The goal was, how strange it may sound, to slow down even more, and try to focus on the services that gives us most pleasure and thus a higher quality of service; like personalized programs, travel advice, small exploratory groups, responsible tourism, urging tour operators and clients to follow ethic guidelines in their activities so that the tourism will have a healthy impact both economically and socially.

Instable airline connections reduced the flux of tourism. A major challenge seems to be helping each other to keep up the moral and the good work in the sector. Tourism in São Tomé and Príncipe is only a few decades old, and we are pioneers, for good and for bad. There is still a lot of work to be done, but in our hands we have a unique opportunity to shape the future of the sector and thereby, indirectly, the nation. The birth of the Santomean Association of Tourism, AST, is an important initiative in that line, spreading a lot of good vibes and enthusiasm.

- Participate actively to consolidate the national economy.

- Motivate both Santomeans and foreigners to protect the national patrimony, natural as well as cultural.

- Influence on grass root level as on governmental level the future of São Tomé and Príncipe so that it will also be a wonderful place to live for the next generations

how

- We think that sustainable development takes place only when we, the local population, is able to sustain itself through decent work.

- We are making an effort to make the local resources known in order to create work posts : Local food, locally owned accommodation, local staff etc.

- We are also trying to help locals to be able to provide better services, so that in the future, sustainable products will be a natural and easy choice for tourists.

- We are, however, not fanatics, and are aware of the fact that presently the local products and services are not the easiest choice, made only by a minority that is ready to accept lower standards for the sake of a clean consciousness.

- We wish to thank the hundreds of 'madmen' that over the last few years have chosen our local products and in this way made it possible for the sector of sustainable tourism to gain confidence, experience and, last but not least, money to improve !

- We are extremely grateful for your support, not just through buying our products and in this way giving us faith in the economical sustainability of the area, but also in form of sharing your experience with us, your moral support and, in many cases, your friendship.

We would also like to thank Hans Ryding - the Great Swede, for his support over the years and for never losing faith in our web site!

Bahnhof São Tomé, our kind host of this site.

Also thanks to Bjørge Brekke from Reisefeber in Norway, who was the decisive factor for the current update.
And last but not least - our thanks to Tjerk Hagemeijer for his help on the Creole orthography.

- We are extremely grateful for your support, not just through buying our products and in this way giving us faith in the economical sustainability of the area, but also in form of sharing your experience with us, your moral support and, in many cases, your friendship.
